Sort-of-famous in Santa Monica - 5-1-10

Achieving my lifelong goal of building a theater and having my own show in it made me deliriously happy. More mature. Glowing with inner peace. Sort-of-famous. Since 1998 my theater, Magicopolis, and show, Escape Reality, had been becoming popular all over Santa Monica. True, I was a household word only on my block of Fourth Street, but still, I felt I had gotten through to the right people.

Imagine how thrilled I was when a Santa Monica sanitation worker emptying a garbage can recognized me on the street and asked me for an autograph. Or when I received word that the Santa Monica Daily Press wanted me to comment on the City's plan to remove some trees on Fourth Street. This meant much more to me than doing casino revue shows, or appearing in comedy clubs, because real, average people, were recognizing me for the first time.

When the Santa Monica Museum of Art asked me to do a speech in their hallowed halls, I was eager to oblige - what a compliment to be asked by the Santa Monica Police Activities League to be a role model for a whole new generation of bored youth. I realized that if I was lucky, I'd never have to get a real job in my life.
